Discover the Truth About Drug & Alcohol Addiction, Detox And Recovery

There are a lot of myths about alcohol addiction and drug detox. These myths (long-held false ideas) can actually be very destructive to peoples’ lives.

You’ve probably heard this one: “Anyone can overcome addiction, it’s only a matter of willpower," or “We tried it already and relapsed, so drug detox and rehab don’t work.” It’s myths like these that can sink any hope for successful drug or alcohol detox and recovery.

Below we will dispel some of the most prevalent myths and encourage addicts, as well as their friends and families, to reach for medical alcohol and drug addiction detox now for help before it’s too late.

MYTH #1: Anyone can overcome addiction — it’s simply a matter of willpower.

FACT: Addiction is almost impossible to manage through willpower alone. The mental and emotional cravings and compulsions that only drugs or alcohol can satisfy are complicated by real neurological changes that are not under conscious control. Very few addicted people stop using drugs or alcohol just because they want to. The fact is, getting off alcohol and addictive drugs without a properly supervised medical drug detox can be dangerous to one’s life.

We can help show you how to properly detox from drugs or alcohol, as well as what to do after a detox program to maintain your recovery with success.

MYTH #2: Addiction is a brain disease that can never be cured.

FACT: No one, anywhere, has ever scientifically proven that addiction is an incurable brain disease. Modern drug detox experts agree that a medical drug detox, followed by effective drug rehab, can bring about a lifelong end to addiction — what can only be called a cure. Countless millions of former addicts around the world attest to this indisputable fact.

MYTH #3: Addicts are immoral (or insane, or mentally deficient, etc.)

FACT: Immorality or insanity have nothing to do with the powerful forces of drug addiction, and no science suggests otherwise. Addictive substances create real physical changes, and it’s a scientific fact that physical dependence and addiction can happen to anyone.

Drugs can cause the kind of mental, physical or emotional states that seem to offer relief from the problems and stresses of life. When addiction develops, it plays no mental or moral favorites. And medical drug detox programs, individually tailored for each person, are the first step of the only real solution for addiction.

MYTH #4: Addicts should be jailed because drug detox and drug rehab “won’t teach them a lesson.”

FACT: Suffering from drug addiction is not a crime. When an addict commits a crime, putting him or her in jail certainly does teach them some lessons.

It teaches them wrong kind of lesson, including:

  • Unfortunately, jail often teaches addicts how to obtain illegal drugs inside a prison, and they stay addicted while incarcerated.
  • Jail teaches addicts how to steal more effectively after they get out, not only prolonging addiction, but also the high costs to society of drug-related crime.
  • Jail teaches that being punished for committing an addiction-related crime, instead of receiving drug detox treatment, is more important to society than treating the addictions that lead to crime.
  • Being forced to come off drugs cold-turkey, dangerously alone in a jail cell, can teach some addicts that ‘the system’, and society at large, places little value on their lives. Many addicts tragically come to believe the life-crushing lie that they are worthless human beings.

These kinds of wrong-headed lessons lead to more harm to society, not less — more drugs, more crime, more ruined lives, and ever-increasing private and public costs.

The right lesson is that drug addiction is treatable, and everyone has value. Rather than jailing addicts for minor drug crimes, a fair and just society sends offenders for supervised medical drug detox.

Done correctly, drug addiction detox leads to a recovered life, not a lost one.

The innovative use of so-called “drug courts” recently implemented in some states, where addicts are offered reduced or forgiven sentences in exchange for successfully completing drug detox programs, are changing some of the barbaric practices covered above. They are proving that timely drug detox reduces drug-related crime rates, and saves countless $millions in legal, health care and lost productivity costs.

MYTH #5: Addicts have to “bottom out” before they will ever consider treatment.

FACT: Countless addicts have been helped into entering alcohol & drug detox programs long before they “hit rock bottom”. In fact, addiction tends to worsen with time, so the longer friends or family members wait to stage some kind of intervention, the more difficult it can be. Do not put off calling a drug and alcohol detox center — professional advice on intervention can help save a life.

MYTH #6: You can’t force someone to enter drug detox or rehab; they have to want help.

FACT: Treatment for addiction can be perfectly successful even when it does not begin voluntarily. Addicts entering alcohol and drug detox under pressure, for example from employers, or when in the military, or when ordered by the legal system, can and do successfully complete detox with the same benefits as those who choose treatment on their own. Once it ends the craving and compulsions, addicts are able to evaluate their lives and to choose a long-term rehab and a substance-free life.

MYTH #7: You can’t treat addicts with medications because medications are drugs.

FACT: Modern medical drug detox treatments frequently utilize special drugs that temporarily ease the withdrawal symptoms associated with the drug detox process. But when choosing a drug detox or treatment program, be wary of programs that send you home dependent on a new drug, with claims that the drug will reduce chances of relapse. A modern medical drug detox, followed by a long-term drug rehab program (the longer the better) can deliver the drug-free life of choice we all hope for.

MYTH #8: Since treatment didn’t work before, it’s probably hopeless, and there’s no point trying again.

FACT: Relapsing after drug or alcohol detox or after drug & alcohol rehab does not mean that all treatment is hopeless. The majority of detox and rehab programs fall short of delivering what is actually possible in overcoming addiction for a lifetime.

Some myths are not just false, they’re downright destructive

There are plenty of myths that are just old-fashioned and unworkable, but a few appear to be intentionally destructive. Some medical drug detox experts who know the facts can only conclude that some myths are being perpetuated to prevent full recovery.

For example, thousands of people are on methadone as a substitute for heroin addiction. The reasons given for this barbarism, such as reducing disease by reducing needle sharing, are not realistic in the face of irrefutable proof that medical drug detox works.

Therefore, “methadone therapy” for heroin addiction is a vicious lie. No one is getting clean and sober taking methadone, so it cannot be called therapy. Even worse, methadone detox is even more difficult than heroin detox. The truth is that tens of thousands of people are trapped by methadone addiction which then fills the pockets of drug companies and methadone clinics.
