Novus Detox Celebrates National Recovery Month

Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) promotes National Recovery Month in order to increase awareness for this life-threatening issue that millions of Americans face, as well as to celebrate those who are recovering from this terrible affliction.

National Recovery Month was first observed in 1989 under the name Treatment Works! Month as a way to honor the work of the professionals who dedicate their lives to providing those in need with substance use treatments. It eventually became known as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in 1998 when it was expanded to also include celebrating the accomplishments of those who are recovering from their substance use disorder. The month finally became known by the name we call it today in 2011 when its scope was expanded to cover every aspect of behavioral health.

“Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery, just as we celebrate health improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease,” SAMHSA writes on the official National Recovery Month website. “The observance reinforces the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.”

Every year, SAMHSA selects a new theme to focus on for the month in order to best share the treatment and recovery success stories. This year, the focus is on health care providers, policymakers, members of the media, and urban communities under the theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.”
