“Everything here was better than I ever imagined. If you want your life back, this staff will help you in any and every way possible.

“The people here showed me that there is light at the end of a dark, dark tunnel that I thought I would never make it out of. All the people—the whole staff, every single person who works here saved my life. Some people think about money and the cost to come here and decide not to. I would have paid $5000 a day to be here with people who helped get my life back. That’s how good this staff is. They really care and understand what you are going through. Thank you with all my heart.”

The why behind prescription drug addiction,
and the reason for medically-supervised detox

You have probably heard of endorphins – the body's natural painkillers and mood elevators. What you may not know is that endorphins are also opiates, very similar to heroin, morphine, and Oxycodone. When a person experiences more pain than the body's natural endorphins can alleviate, doctors often prescribe pain killers. OxyContin or other pain medications are usually prescribed to reduce the pain of injuries, bursitis, dislocations, fractures, neuralgia, arthritis, lower back problems, and the pain associated with cancer.

After you've taken prescription pain medications for a while - supplying the body with an external source of pain killers - the body tends to produce fewer and fewer endorphins on its own and, consequently, becomes physically dependant on the drug. As many of the conditions for which it is prescribed are chronic, taking OxyContin for a long time is not unusual.

When you then try to stop using the drug, the body undergoes severe trauma that can be very painful. Although physical dependence is not the only factor in addiction and, for some, OxyContin addiction can happen with even short term use, this dependency, and the pain experienced when you stop taking the drug, opens the door to addiction.

Although prescription drug addiction often begins with a legitimate prescription from a doctor, it is also widely available on the street. Once the word got out that OxyContin produces a high similar to heroin, illegal use of OxyContin caught on like wildfire.

What can I expect when I arrive at Novus?

Getting through drug detox at Novus is different than the experiences you may have heard about, or already tried, with other detox programs.

Your detox is medically supervised, but is not in a hospital setting. No hospital gowns, no uncomfortable beds in uncomfortable hospital wards.

We use medications as needed, and we’ll put you on a nutritional program to build up your body and speed recovery.

When you arrive at Novus, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff and shown to your private room, complete with telephone, television, DVD player and a high-speed Internet connection.

Once you’ve settled in, our medical staff will interview you and design your methadone detox program. We’ll make it as comfortable as possible - many people even continue working while they’re here.

Although we can’t say exactly how long it will take, most people complete their detox within six to ten days. You’ll leave Novus feeling much better, and you won’t be dependant on a substitute drug.

Our counselors will also work with you to figure out your next step so you can stay off drugs and get your life back on track.

Don’t wait – the longer it goes on, the higher the risk.
