WARNING: Prescription Drug Detox
Is Really NOT An Option During Pregnancy
Prescription painkillers are America’s fastest-growing drugs of dependence, addiction and sudden death. There are more demands for prescription drug detox than for all the usual “street” drugs combined, such as heroin, methamphetamine or cocaine.
Narcotic prescription drugs, such as OxyContin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, Vicodin, Percocet and Lortab, pass through the placental barrier and affect the fetus in the uterus. A baby can become just as dependent on the drugs as its mother, and even more so. The infant is then forced to suffer the indescribably horrible shock, pain and misery of prescription drug withdrawal as soon as it’s born.
Everyone who abuses prescription drugs needs to know these two important facts:
- PRESCRIPTION DRUG DETOX IS NOT READILY AVAILABLE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN.
- IF YOU ARE ABUSING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, DO NOT BECOME PREGNANT.
The dangers to the fetus as well as the mother from prescription drug detox during pregnancy can result in birth defects, spontaneous abortion and even fetal death. To become pregnant while dependent on prescription drugs is cruelly irresponsible.
If you are abusing prescription drugs of any kind and are at risk of becoming pregnant, enroll NOW in a prescription drug detox program. In fact, it’s a life-saving idea whether or not you are at risk of pregnancy.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome:
No baby should
suffer like this
Infants withdrawing from a prescription drug dependence created during pregnancy are suffering what is called “neonatal abstinence syndrome”, or NAS. The baby’s first few days are marked by endless crying, as it suffers from tremors, seizures, stiffness, diarrhea and excruciating pain.
Many such infants must remain in hospital for weeks, while doctors try to wean them off the drugs. The financial costs are in the tens of thousands of dollars per patient, but the emotional costs are incalculable.
Adults going through prescription painkiller detox, such as OxyContin detox, without the help of modern OxyContin medical detox protocols such as those provided by Novus Medical Detox Center, can suffer terrible OxyContin withdrawal symptoms. But at least they’re adults, and they knew what they were getting into.
But forcing an innocent newborn to suffer withdrawal is cruel beyond belief. Neonatal nurses say that witnessing a newborn infant’s narcotic withdrawal suffering is something no one should have to experience.
The tragedy of newborn prescription drug dependence is very real. The problem is so widespread that even the New York Times and Time Magazine are writing about it. There are no figures on the extent of the problem nationally, but the Times suggests it has grown everywhere, but especially so in more rural regions where OxyContin abuse is rampant.
The fact is, normal detox centers do not treat pregnant women. The Times reported that a few physicians are looking for solutions, exploring both the medical and ethical aspects of exposing a fetus to the rigors of a prenatal prescription drug detox. But prescription drug detox for pregnant women is simply not an option.
Until science catches up with reality, the ONLY valid recourse for women of childbearing age, who also abuse prescription drugs, is to enroll immediately in a prescription drug detox program as soon as possible.

Prescription drug detox before pregnancy
prevents the misery of infant dependence
Florida’s new Attorney General, Pamela Bondi, announced recently that a new program is in the works to deal with the state’s prescription drug abuse epidemic. Chief among the problems, she said, is the soaring number of babies being born dependent on prescription drug painkillers like oxycodone and OxyContin.
Statewide, it is estimated that at least 1,300 babies were treated for withdrawal in 2010 – and that is a 30 percent increase from the previous year. At St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, nearly one-fifth of all babies admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit are there to be treated for oxycodone withdrawal or withdrawal from other drugs. Bondi says she will partner with St. Joseph’s to start a national task force aimed at educating women about the dangers of prescription drugs and pregnancy.
During the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s and ‘90s, there was a lot of attention on the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) – the exposure of a fetus to cocaine. Before long, the term “crack baby” was coined to describe the tragedy of thousands of infants being born with a variety of nasty conditions thought to be caused by the drug.
PCE was associated with premature deliveries, birth defects (some truly appalling), as well as attention deficit disorder and other conditions such as cognitive, motor, behavioral, developmental and language problems.
But as the years passed, it was learned that most “crack babies” were growing up to be fairly normal. Public interest in the “crack baby” phenomenon, if not medical interest, soon waned. The pure hell that newborns were forced to experience, as they withdrew “cold turkey” from crack cocaine, was also forgotten.
But as the old song goes, “Times they are a-changin”. Trends in drug abuse have forced the medical community to take a new look at drug-dependent newborns. These days, the culprit isn’t crack cocaine, it’s prescription opioids and opiates. Chief among the problem painkillers are the heroin-like painkillers oxycodone, and its time-release version OxyContin.
The soaring increases in oxycodone addiction, and OxyContin abuse and addiction have caused a significant spike in the numbers of newborns being born fully dependent on prescription painkillers. The ONLY long-term solution is a timely OxyContin detox, BEFOREsomeone becomes pregnant.
Of course, that is not a solution for the thousands of prescription-drug-dependent women who are already pregnant who must search far and wide for an advanced medical setting geared to detox both mother and baby at the same time. But the only sensible solution for anyone suffering from prescription drug problems, especially painkillers like OxyContin, is to enroll immediately in an OxyContin detox program and deal with it right now, before more problems happen.
