Protesting Parents Want To Ban OxyContin

Subscribe

A group of more than 30 parents and friends gathered in Tampa last week for a "Ban OxyContin Rally" to protest the continued sale of the powerful narcotic painkiller which, they say, is killing not just their children, but people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Carrying placards with slogans such as “Ban OxyContin” in big red letters, the group demonstrated in front of a Tampa pain clinic which is typical of hundreds of such clinics across Florida that hand out narcotics to almost anyone who asks.

Florida is known as “America’s pill mill” because its pain clinics supply more than 30% of all the narcotic painkillers prescribed in the United States. A huge percentage of OxyContin addiction and abuse across eastern and southeastern U.S. is supported from Florida’s ubiquitous pain clinics.

OxyContin Addiction Knows No Boundaries

The Tampa protesters attracted plenty of attention from passing motorists who enthusiastically honked their horns in agreement with the placards. Television news teams covering the rally helped bring the message to tens of thousands of Bay Area viewers. But eventually, news of the rally will reach millions of internet surfers and hopefully spark similar events in other communities—OxyContin addiction knows no geographic or social boundaries.

The demonstration and protest was organized by members of a group of like-minded anti-OxyContin addiction activists who found each other through various internet forums, and particularly through the web site www.banoxycontin.com.

More than 6,000 people have signed the online petition to ban OxyContin. The petition asks the FDA to “immediately ban the distribution of OxyContin to new patients”.

The ban OxyContin website and petition is sponsored by Novus Medical Detox Center and the Prescription Addiction Radio Show.

Parents relate OxyContin addiction horror stories

Most of the parents at the demonstration encountered OxyContin because of recreational drug use by their children. Their horror stories range from combating difficult dependencies and addictions to dealing with the ultimate tragedy, the heartbreaking loss of a child.

Sonya Wimberly told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that her son, 18-year-old Steven Wimberly, died January 12 at his girlfriend’s house after consuming oxycodone, the active ingredient in OxyContin, and Xanax, a benzodiazepine “anti-anxiety” drug also popular as a drug of abuse.

“I thought because he wasn't a drug addict, that he would be OK,” Wimberly said. “But that's not true. OxyContin should be banned. It's an epidemic. Our youth is dying, and Florida is allowing it.”

Gail Graves told Fox 13 News that she lost her son Justin to addiction on Halloween of 2007. Graves drove all the way from Wisconsin to join the rally and protest the sale of OxyContin.

Kathy Murphy of Tampa told Fox 13 that her 20-year-old son became addicted to OxyContin and has been through repeated stints in rehab. Just out of rehab this week, he and his family are keeping their fingers crossed that he will fully recover his life this time.

And Teresa Miller, who said her son was addicted to OxyContin, asserted that doctors are over prescribing medication for minor pain.

“They're getting innocent people addicted. Too many children and family members are dying—an innocent child taking a pill and dying. That pain can never ... you just never recover from it.”

Florida considering legislation to combat OxyContin addiction

Oxycodone, the “legal heroin” in OxyContin, was blamed in 2008 for the deaths of almost 1,000 Floridians. Tens of thousands have died across the country. OxyContin has come to be nicknamed “hillbilly heroin” because of its widespread abuse in the southeastern states.

Two bills currently in the Florida state legislature seek to limit the number of such pills that can be dispensed to patients in a given time period. Legislation also seeks to control who can prescribe narcotic painkillers.

But right now, you can still buy OxyContin on Tampa’s streets for $10 a pill.
