Girl's Overdose Death Raises Questions

By DENISE LAVOIE, Associated Press Writer Fri Mar 23, 7:02 PM ET

HULL, Mass. - In the final months of Rebecca Riley's life, a school nurse said the little girl was so weak she was like a "floppy doll." The preschool principal had to help Rebecca off the bus because the 4-year-old was shaking so badly. And a pharmacist complained that Rebecca's mother kept coming up with excuses for why her daughter needed more and more medication. None of their concerns was enough to save Rebecca.

Rebecca - who had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity and bipolar disorder, or what used to be called manic depression - died Dec. 13 of an overdose of prescribed drugs, and her parents have been arrested on murder charges, accused of intentionally overmedicating their daughter to keep her quiet and out of their hair.

Hi Everyone,

We had a terrific open house celebration on Saturday, and Moose, our Chief of Security, really enjoyed himself!

Where We Stand On Accepting Patients

As we said last week, we have obtained our permits from Pasco County and the last step is to obtain approval from the Department of Children and Families ( "DCF").

The DCF has notified us that they are going to inspect our facility and meet our staff on Friday, March 30th.   We are optimistic that the DCF will provide us the license after the inspection or, if there are a few items we need to change, will provide it early next week.  We will give you an update in next week's newsletter.

To those of you who have called and said that you had people ready to come, please be patient for a few more days.  You can always call Eric at 800-505-6604 for more information.

A Better Look At The Facility

As we have stated before, our goal at Novus is to create a clean, comfortable, stress-free  environment where people can safely and sanely detox from unwanted and unneeded drugs and alcohol under the care of medical professionals who want to help them accomplish their goal of changing their lives for the better.

In the above photo, you see our lounge where patients can read, watch television or DVD's or just relax.

The next photo is of our dining area.  Patients will not only have their meals and snacks here but can also play cards or work on their computers wirelessly while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea.
