DO I NEED A MEDICAL DETOX, A DRUG REHAB OR BOTH?

When someone has a problem with drugs or alcohol and decides that he or she is ready to change their lives, one of the first questions to ask is whether he or she needs to go to a medical detox or to a drug rehab, or to both.  The answer to this is not easy but generally depends on whether the person is dependent or addicted.

Defining Drug or Alcohol Dependent or Dependence

A person is said to be "dependent" on a drug if the person is going to have uncomfortable physiological symptoms when they stop taking the drug.  Many times a person will continue taking the drug, not because they believe that it is helping them, but because stopping the drug will be very painful for them and will possibly prevent them from working or doing their normal activities for days or even weeks.

Defining Drug or Alcohol Addiction or Being Addicted

A person is said to be addicted to a drug or alcohol if the person not only is dependent but is drinking alcohol or taking the drug because of the way it makes them feel and gets them “high”.  If they stop drinking or taking the drug, they will not only have uncomfortable physiological symptoms but will also have emotional issues.

Defiing Medical Detox

A medical detox is where a person goes to an inpatient medical center to for their drug withdrawal or alcohol withdrawal.  There is a vast difference between medical detox  centers.  You can see the difference between Novus Medical Detox Center and most other facilities by clicking here.

Defining Drug Rehab

Drug rehab refers to programs which seek to help a person addicted to drugs or alcohol overcome their need for the drug or alcohol on an emotional level.  Drug rehabs are outpatient and inpatient.    Some drug rehab programs include a detox component while others do not.
