Why Medical Detox?
All Drug Detoxification Programs Are Not the Same
You need a drug detox program if the drugs you’ve been taking:
- Have become addictive;
- Are not handling the problem for which they were originally prescribed;
- Are causing unwanted and unsafe side effects.
Simply discontinuing medication, alcohol or other drugs can be dangerous and create other potentially severe medical problems. The solution is a medical detoxification program designed specifically for you that will enable your safe detoxification from drugs.
At Novus, your drug detox program is designed for you by our medical staff after an extensive intake interview and analysis of your medical information and drug use. Once designed, each step of your drug detox is carefully monitored by our staff. Unlike at some facilities, during the monitoring of your program, we listen to you and value your input. When a drug detoxification is properly done, most people experience little discomfort. Our goal is that not only is your detoxification successful but also that it is as comfortable as possible.
Drug detox is a serious matter, which is why most prescription labels carry the warning to not stop taking the medication without consulting your physician. It is very dangerous to just stop taking most types of prescription drugs and it can be just as dangerous for alcoholics to stop using alcohol without a medically supervised detoxification program.
Novus can safely and comfortably help you detox from alcohol, drugs or medications.

Medical Detoxification vs. Rehab
Drug detox programs are not the same as rehab programs. There is an important distinction between medical detoxification and a full drug rehab. A medical detoxification can take between seven to 14 days to safely withdraw from a drug. Drug Rehab can take weeks or months, and is designed to handle drug abuse and the underlying issues associated with such abuse.
Some candidates for medical detox will not need extended alcohol or drug rehab. If you complete your detoxification program and decide that you want to explore some options for further rehab, our professional staff will help educate you on the rehab programs that are available.
Medical Drug Detoxification is truly the only way to safely withdraw from alcohol and certain other drugs. Certain medicines like painkillers require a medical withdrawal that is under the care of a medical staff. Dosages are stepped down over a period of days. Sometimes medicines are prescribed to ease withdrawal. Additionally, there may be some adverse reactions to the drug withdrawal itself, so it is necessary to be in a medically-supervised environment where you can relax and fully recover. Utilizing a graduated stepdown procedure that is part of an individually designed and medically- supervised detoxification program allows you to withdraw from the drugs in a safe and comfortable manner. This can take anywhere from seven to 14 days.
Rehab
Rehab is different from detoxification. The result of a successful drug detox program is that you are safely able to stop taking the drug—not that you have addressed or handled the reason for taking the drug.
Rehab is needed if you have become addicted to a drug. Rehab addresses the underlying issues of addiction. Since the purpose of rehab is to permanently handle addiction, not detoxification from a drug, it is important to select a rehab program that has a proven success rate.
At Novus, we provide you with a detoxification program to allow you to get off drugs and/or alcohol safely! Call one of our Admissions Counselors today to get more information and help you make the best decision for yourself and your family.
