The Electric Light Bulb

By Steve Hayes, Director of Novus Medical Detox Center

On January 27, 1880, Thomas Edison filed a patent for a practical, long-lasting and easily produced electric light bulb. A prolific inventor with over a thousand patents in his name, Edison had only three months of formal education and was thought by his teachers to be very slow. In addition, Edison was practically deaf from an early age.

However, Edison proved that you needed not education but the ability to see a problem and solve it in order to invent something that was needed by society, and society really needed an electric light.

In a society where many felt that it was time to go to bed when it became dark, lighting for most was from candles, oil burning lamps or gas fueled lamps. Not only was the lighting dim but also dangerous-many times fires were started.

From the 1830's, there had been attempts to develop a practical electric light bulb. However, all the previous attempts had failed. Some failed because they might work for a few minutes but then went out, and others were too expensive or large to be practical.

Edison determined that he needed to develop new internal parts and find a way to use a much lower amount of electricity. One of the problems was that the bulb needed to produce light by heating up an element (called the filament) that would produce light. Previous filaments only lasted a few minutes but Edison solved this and many other problems. This type of lighting is called incandescent lighting.

Edison's electric light bulb was inexpensive to produce, lasted a long time and could be mass produced. Edison literally gave light to the world.

At Novus, we daily see people who want to come out of the darkness created by drugs or alcohol and bring light to those around them. Fortunately, their path is very different from that of Edison. There is no reason to invent the necessary parts of the process, but it does take the decision to see the problem and decide to solve it-just like Edison.

At Novus, we have developed procedures that comfortably and safely help these courageous people overcome drugs or alcohol. We are proud to share with you one of their stories.

"Everyone on staff was awesome. All nurses, counselors, and all staff were amazing and made the experience so much easier to go through.  Everyone went above and beyond what I expected.  Tammy rocks!

I finally feel like myself again.  I can finally wake up on my own and not crave pain medication just to function.  I feel like I'm looking at the world with new eyes.  I'm thinking clearly without the haze I've felt for so long.  I'm looking towards the future for the first time in a long time.  I've realized that there are so many things that can help me with the injuries I have had by taking herbal supplements and not narcotics. It's a great feeling.  I really feel that this experience saved my life.  The whole staff at Novus is truly the most caring group of people I've ever encountered in one place from the owners to the counselors, nurses, cooking and cleaning staff.  You're all amazing and inspirational individuals!
