Michael Jackson,
Another Prescription Drug Death?

By Steve Hayes, Director of Novus Medical Detox Center

On June 25, 2009, one of the more influential entertainers of our time died.  At age 50, Michael Jackson was not universally loved as a person.  His behavior was considered very bizarre by some.  However, few can argue that he was an entertainer of extraordinary ability.

One of the definitions of entertain is, "To hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting."   Michael Jackson certainly entertained millions and his music will continue to entertain even after he is gone.

Will Rogers once said, "It isn't what we don't know that gives us trouble. It's what we know that ain't so."  Like Elvis Presley, Anna Nicole Smith, and Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson is the latest in a line of people that "knew" that the way to deal with the pain and stress was to take prescription drugs.

Of course, this belief was reinforced by doctors who refuse to diagnose the cause of health problems and worship at the altar of prescription drugs-not to treat the problem but to block the symptoms.  We call this Radio Medicine-turn up the volume and ignore the cause of the sounds or symptoms.

News reports say that Michael Jackson had back pain.  The Radio Medicine solution is to use narcotics to block the signals and not to treat the problem.  In fact, there are reports that shortly before his death, Jackson received a large dose of morphine-legal heroin.

It is said that he was very anxious about his upcoming tour.  Rather than examine the cause of the anxiety, which could be physiological, the Radio Medicine solution-give him Xanax and Zoloft, not to treat the cause but to unsuccessfully drown out the symptoms he was experiencing.

The media focus on Michael Jackson's prescription drug addiction will surely get ratings, but it will also help save many lives and help many more escape from the trap of prescription drugs and Radio Medicine.  This new awareness of prescription drugs will not help the thousands who have lost children, spouses and friends to these deadly drugs, but it may save millions of lives that are now at risk.

Go to http://banoxycontin.com and read the chilling comments about the losses caused by another form of legal heroin, OxyContin-just one prescription drug.

At Novus, we are very proud that we daily see people who have decided that they are going to escape the trap of prescription drugs and regain their life.  Here is one of their success stories.

If anyone has to go through the horrific experience of withdrawal, this is definitely the place to do it. Everyone here was so nice and attentive and the atmosphere here is surprisingly positive and incredibly safe.

I want to acknowledge Jean, Patty, Joe, Carla, Jodi, Cate, JJ, Hayden, Montana, Paul, Irene and all the kitchen staff, Stacy and Danette. Everyone was great.

The food was great.  I ate better here than I ever have. The fresh vegetables were great and the variety was awesome.

The cleaning staff did an amazing job everyday. The facility was so comfortable, clean and looked great.

When I first got here I was dreading going through the whole withdrawal experience because of what I had seen on "Intervention" and other TV shows and movies. I was in total denial about what the meds were doing to me and how I was a totally different person on Oxy, like my entire personality had disappeared, without me even realizing it. I was shocked when I finally came out of withdrawal how the Oxy had dulled me and coming into this situation I thought that person was gone forever.

I am so thankful for Novus, I feel like you gave me my life back. I finally feel hopeful and truly believe I can have a life with chronic pain and it doesn't have to be who I am, it doesn't define me. I had believed it did for six years. I know I can thrive and be successful and can maybe even help others, experiencing what I've been going through, make the same revelations.

I always laughed when people said this would be a life changing experience, and not to be cliché, but this truly has been a life changing experience and I can only hope that I can make as big an impact in one person's life as the counselors and nurses have in countless lives. Thank you Novus!
